Although Noor Family Services is most commonly related to providing culturally-sensitive services for foreign-born and immigrant women and children impacted by domestic violence, NFS provides services to all victims regardless of gender. and background. Services are grouped into three primary program areas, each with emphasis on essential steps that have a meaningful impact. PRO BONO LEGAL SERVICES
Noor Family Services provides pro bono legal assistance and support to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault as they engage with the legal system. These services include obtaining and enforcing protective orders, pursuing divorce and child custody issues, and other legal matters, including seeking criminal charges against the batterer. In addition to attorney services, legal advocates are also available for court accompaniment to all court hearings as well as provide victims and survivors information concerning their legal rights, the legal process, immigration issues, including possible outcomes and can provide information that will help survivors make informed decisions about whether to engage in the court process.
EMERGENCY SERVICES, REFERRAL, & CRISIS MANAGEMENT
Our focus is to provide immediate access to safety and shelter. Our services in this area include crisis call staffing, intake assessments, shelter referral, legal and therapeutic services. Life Skills Enhancement is also an essential element of NFS crisis management programs. More than 50 percent of the women who seek refuge with Noor Family Services lack the basic life skills they need to become economically and emotionally independent. Through our case management program, we offer a variety of services that are tailored to victim’s needs. Trained staff and volunteers work to educate, empathize, and empower victims and survivors by developing goal-oriented plans that include job training, education, childcare, parenting skills, stress management, and legal advocacy. Our goal is to foster self-sufficiency and stability, thereby minimizing the likelihood that they will return to an abusive environment.
Public education is critical to preventing future domestic violence incidents in iimmigrant communities. Our education program builds awareness and shares knowledge with the community through classes and workshops that meet a wide variety of needs and learning styles. Current planned education efforts include cultural-sensitivity training, to increase awareness about the cultural nuances victims face in foreign-born and immigrant communities, as well as interactive violence prevention programs, geared towards first-responders, faith-based communities, community leaders, shelters, social services agencies, and the community at large.
